LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. Helps SWTRA with Greener Technology!

The South Wales Trunk Road Agency (SWTRA), on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government, have installed 62 LED Roadway Satellite™ lanterns on the A48 (Trunk Road) Briton Ferry Bridge as a trial to save energy, reduce carbon emissions and explore new technologies. The conversion took place during the first two weeks of March to coincide with a closure booked for re-surfacing.

The high performance Satellite series lanterns, which use 96 LEDs, have replaced 250W High Pressure Sodium Lanterns mounted on 10m columns at 40m spacing, yet still provided energy savings in excess of 100W per column. The Electrical Co-Ordinator for SWTRA, Meirion Williams adds, “most importantly, we have done so without reducing the lighting category for this busy dual carriageway, and we are very impressed by the performance and the comfortable lighting level it provides.”Huw Convery, Director of Business Development for LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. adds “the installation is a great example of what can be achieved using this technology, both the CO2 reduction and the energy savings are significant, but for SWTRA, maintenance on this busy highway has reduced dramatically.” The Satellite™ series lanterns are available with 24 and 48 LEDs for residential areas and 72 and 96 LEDs for main traffic routes, with drive currents ranging from 280mA to 600mA.
