The recent announcement to upgrade Nova Scotia Highway Lighting to LED technology will save the province an estimated $ 9.75 million in energy and maintenance costs over the 20 year life of the fixtures. LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. (LRL) will supply 2,600 Satellite Series fixtures for a project which will retrofit the province’s highway light fixtures to energy saving and maintenance-free LED technology.

In addition to the energy and maintenance savings, the conversion to LRL fixtures will provide a GHG (greenhouse gas) reduction in excess of 31,000 tonnes.

The announcement was made by Nova Scotia Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Bill Estabrooks  at LRL’s Amherst manufacturing facility.  During his remarks, Minister Estabrooks highlighted Nova Scotia’s leadership in this large scale conversion of highway lighting fixtures and stated that Nova Scotia is a leader in supporting sustainable, green technologies.  The total contract, including installation, is valued at $ 3.199 million and was awarded to Black & MacDonald Limited.  The LED fixtures will be manufactured and supplied by LRL.

“This project will be one of the largest deployments of LED fixture technology for highway applications globally and will be a great showcase for our technology to the global audience and other departments of highways and transportation.  In fact, we believe it represents the first wholesale change-out of highway lighting fixtures in North America,” said LRL CEO, Chuck Cartmill.

Mr. Cartmill further commented that “the fixtures supplied by LRL will deliver substantial energy savings, reduce maintenance costs, as well as provide improved illumination on Nova Scotia highways.   Clients worldwide have embraced our technology.  At present, LRL has more than 250 municipal and utility installations in 11 countries, and a large-scale installation of our technology in highway applications will certainly open new markets for us.”
